Administrative Boundaries and Identity Issues Commission as well as National Reconciliation Commissions; In the presence of the Speakers of the House of Peoples' Representatives and the House of Federation of the FDRE; Handed over their responsibilities and documents to the new National Consultative Commission (NEC).

During the handover, the Speaker of the House of Peoples' Representatives, Honorable Tagesse Chafo noted that the commissions had passed many challenges and that with adequate supervision and support they could have done more.

He stressed the need to learn from their past and provide the necessary follow-up and support to the current Consultative Commission. He said all parties should agree to take the resolution of the people with genuine and thoughtful consultation to sustain and heal the country. “Adequate preparation is needed to take the work of previous commissions as a benchmark. In this regard, the necessary support and monitoring is being provided to the new National Consultative Commission. The people, the main power, must be fully involved and committed in resolving difficulties” said Honorable Tagesse Chafo.

For his part, the Speaker of the House of Federation, Honorable Agegnehu Teshager said the government was right to set up these commissions as border and identity issues need to be addressed.

“They have done a lot of tasks and the commissions have faced limitations as there is no regulation on how they should work. For instance: they have made recommendations by conducting a study on 'The root causes of conflicts in our country and their resolutions'. The general conclusion that "commissions did not do their parts" is inappropriate. From now on responsibilities need to be reviewed and monitored regularly. We need to be realistic and get out of start things, but never surface them” he said.

The two House expressed their readiness to provide the necessary support and assistance to the new Commission to maintain its freedom. The members of the old commissions thanked by the house for their time, energy and money during their tenure and presented certificates of recognition.

Boundaries and Identity Affairs Commissioner Tassew Gebre (Phd) and National Reconciliation Commissioner Cardinal Berhaneyesus Souraphiel summarized and report the activities that have taken place so far. Both said the government did not provide adequate support and that there were no favorable conditions. He called for the study and documentation to be implemented and for the ongoing work to continue.

Commissioner for National Consultation, Mesfin Araya, said he had learned a lot from the two commissions and that the commissions were not conducive to promoting their work. As for the documents and studies that have been prepared, however, it remains to be seen how they will be used. The new commission, for its part, said: activates are being prepared in an inclusive manner.
