Safeguarding Ethiopian National Interests and Security

(Parliamentary News) May 19, 2021 Addis Ababa: - The House of Peoples' Representatives Standing Committee on Law, Justice and Democracy Affairs has called for the establishment of an institution to safeguard the national interest and security of the country.

The Standing Committee made the remarks while reviewing the Ethiopian Media Authority's nine-month performance report for the 2013 E.C fiscal year.

According to the review, the Authority should work harder than ever to control the flow of news, Social Media, New and print media and take corrective action.

The Standing Committee also said that the Ethiopian Media Authority should be built as a strong and independent institution based on the country's overall economic, political and social activities and safeguard the national interest and security of the country.

The Standing Committee also noted that the institute should be built with a manpower that is able to anticipate internal and external media threats and monitor the media for sake of national interest and security of the country.

The Standing Committee noted that the Authority has been able to provide licensing and registration services electronically and has licensed more than 51 Movies, TV Series and documentary productions.

Another strong performance of the Authority is in allocating free airtime and newspaper columns for the upcoming national and regional elections in collaboration with the Electoral Board of Ethiopia.
