The House of Peoples' Representatives Foreign relations and Peace Affairs Standing Committee called for a study of conflict-prone areas and conditions at risk before conflicts and violence occur.

The Standing Committee issued the notice after reviewing the activities of the Ministry of Peace today. The Committee looked at the Ministry and carefully observe its activity beyond the nine month performance report.

The Chairperson of the Standing Committee Honourable Dima Nogo (Phd) stressed the need for the Ministry to focus on studying the sources and solutions of conflicts over the past twenty or thirty years.

He recalled that there are various traditional conflict resolution systems in the country, adding that the extent to which conflict resolution has worked should be studied.

At the Peace Exhibition Center, there is an exhibit showing the Gamo Fathers' traditional and ancient way of reconciliation. There is a figurative image of a father pleading with his knees to avoid the damage of human life and property. Members of the Standing Committee lauded the image of Ethiopian peace mothers pleading. The Committee said the centre needs to be strengthened.

The Standing Committee noted that the ministry is in a position to carry out its mission in a modern manner. The Committee says it would be better to use technology to track down conflicts before they occur and there is a need to create awareness among the people. A system must be put in place to enable the people to support the government through technology.

The Committee also pointed out that those who came up with solutions and paid for peace in various forums should be remembered at the ministry's exhibition centre.

Taye Dendea, State Minister for Peace Building and National Reconciliation, said the new structure of the institute is based on knowledge. He said only those who have passed the exam have been included in the new classification and the positions have been reduced from 684 to 273.

He said the ministry is working on measures to prevent conflicts before they occur. "We will work closely with the regions and other stakeholders on conflict resolution," he said.

He pointed out that there is a need to change the mind-set of the general education system associated with youth volunteers.
