“Ethiopia values longstanding people-to-people ties with Sudan”

Nov 22nd, 2019; Addis Ababa: House Speaker Tagesse Chaffo welcomed the public diplomacy delegation of the Republic of Sudan saying: “Ethiopia highly values the longstanding people-to-people ties and mutual understanding between Ethiopia and the Republic of Sudan.”

Speaker of the House of Peoples’ Representatives of the FDRE, his honour Tagesse Chaffo; in his recent speech delivered to the Sudanese delegation remarked, the two countries are naturally and historically bound and linked together, inextricably.  

The Speaker added, in addition to the common geographic location, Ethiopia and Sudan share history, languages, cultural backgrounds, lifestyle and other features at large on societal basis. Of course, as to him, the great civilizations of Axum and Merowe along with river Nile cemented the relations of the two neighbouring countries.

“We share important joint mechanisms in which our political, economic, and social cooperation operates. We re-energized our multifaceted cooperation. The economic interdependence between the two countries is growing. Infrastructure connectivity by road and air is also gradually improving”, the honourable House Speaker said.

House Speaker indicated, the principle of solidarity has become the defining feature for the bilateral relations of the two sisterly countries. Accordingly, they should aim to elevate the multi-faceted relations into a new and higher level so as to meet the needs of the people of both countries, he stressed.

Regarding the current political situation in Sudan, the Speaker welcomed the formation of the civilian-led transitional government. He also expressed the appreciation by the Ethiopia for Sudan in which the country showed firm commitment to fully and effectively implement the political agreement for the needs of the Sudanese people, most importantly.

The Speaker forwarded his gratitude for the public diplomacy delegation of Sudan regarding the principled position of Sudan with respect to the ongoing construction of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam. Once again, he disclosed the win-win principle with those in concern of Ethiopia to the delegates.

His excellence Salwa Mohammad Mahgoub, head of the public diplomacy delegation of Sudan along with the delegation members appreciated the welcome. On their part, the delegates expressed the readiness of their own country’s willingness to work with Ethiopia. The Sudanese delegation first visit was in May 2015, followed by the Ethiopian part just a year later. This turn is the second round according to the information learned.
