“House undergoes dynamism in critical approaches”

Feb 21, 2020; Addis Ababa: “House of Peoples’ Representatives of the FDRE is undertaking its tasks with critical approaches, dynamically” said His Excellence, Tagesse Chaffo; Speaker of the House.

The Speaker said this to EBC’s exclusive interview held at his office regarding how critical was the half-year’s accomplishment of the House. During then, he elaborated; the dynamism of MPs of the House has shown overt changesfrom time-to-time in action-oriented monitoring and supervisions conducted upon the performances of executive wing of the state.

The MPs, for instance, came-up with challenging questions which actually were rooted in their constituencies and the general public during the face-to-face Q and A discussion with the PM Abiy Ahmed (PhD), before about a fortnight, in the1stspecial sitting of the 5th tenure of the 5thHouse; the Speaker reminded.

“In the half-year, the House monitored, supervised and evaluated about 1 hundred 75 institutions and feed-backed them. As a result of the strong reactions from the House, leadership of two institutions reformed by the appropriate body of the government. The House, in general, is critically evaluating the executive.

“As the name itself implies, the House is the venue where useful discourses shall prevail. I think that is why the MPs shall only be governed by the constitution, the will of the people and their conscience according to the active constitution” His Excellence Tagesse elucidated.

Moreover, the House examined and ratified 25 proclamations from which 13 are entitled to the rule of law, directed towards various compelling sectors and the remaining 12 were about loan and bi-lateral agreements, the Speaker disclosed.

The House, before its official break for the current month, which in-real-terms is the month that the MPs interact with their voters and the general public in their constituencies: overtook its duties considering the prevalence of rule of law within the territorial jurisdiction of the nation and the economic benefits of the citizens in general; the Speaker ascertained.

As well, supervisions conducted physically in the field have been the major part of the tasks of MPs, His Honour, Tagesse Chaffo pointed. Accordingly, the MPs visited the GERD and are closely following even the recent negotiations with the lower riparian countries in favour of the nation, he informed.

The imminent 2020 national election, the national peace and security along with the public diplomacy affairs are also areas where the House paid due attentions, the Speaker indicated.

In addition to all the above issues, the House has established healthy and working relations with the Attorney General of the Federal Government in order to take care of the audit imbalance reports; the honourable Tagesse specified. This specific task is carried-out by a special committee in which the Speaker himself is the chairman, it is learnt.
