Human Rights Commission presents performance report to House

  •  House ratifies human trafficking and smuggling law

Jan 23, 2020; Addis Ababa: Human Rights Commission of the FDRE presented its six-month performance report to the House of Peoples’ Representatives, today.

Daniel Bekele (PhD), Commissioner General of the Commission remarked, the Commission is operating under tense political situations that influence its independence to act as per the mission and objectives that it originally was established for.

Well, he added, it is obvious that the Ethiopian reform faced huge challenges and obstructions that resulted in human rights crisis. And possibly, all of them emanate from the deeper past roots of political, social and economic complexities in which the country was immersed, the Commissioner elaborated.

As a result, the Commission is restructuring itself for effective duties of its mission with radical measures as to Dr Daniel. Moreover, researches hoped to build-up the performance capacities of the Commission are now, going on; he pointed.

National peace and stability are responsibilities upon the shoulders of everyone and hence, every citizen shall contribute his/her part for the real realization of the human rights in the nation, the Commissioner recommended. He extended his remarks and said; the Ethiopian government shall act as per the law of the land to abolish the violations.

MPs forwarded suggestions, comments and questions that indicate the report’s incomplete appearance. They said; the report failed to include the human rights violations on the ground in real context and the situations the nation is engulfed in. The report couldn’t show the reactions from the law enforcers against the human rights violators and the efforts exerted by the Commission to enforce law, as to the comments from the MPs.

The Legal, Justice and Democracy Affairs Standing Committee is requested by the MPs to monitor and supervise the Commission on a better level. The Commission was only praised for its active participation in the legislature activities of the House whenever it is invited to do so.

The Commission, in general, was recommended to exert its full effort to execute its mandates delegated to it by law of the country.

On the other hand, the House ratified a proclamation for Prevention and Suppression of Trafficking in Persons and Smuggling of Migrants, unanimously. It has been learnt that the bill was under investigation for better effects before it is officially promulgated today.
